I'm excited to introduce my new name and logo. Thrift Wish really represents what I want to do with my Blog and Instagram, sharing the excitement of thrift and secondhand shopping. So why now? I recently moved away from DC, so my old logo no longer made sense and honestly it just felt like a good time for a refresh. Welcome to Thrift Wish!
One category I have a hard time finding at the thrift store is "going out" clothing. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of Forever 21 dresses and skirts, but nothing my real life adult self would be wearing, even to the bar. I couldn't believe it when I came across this French Connection dress. It's form fitting but super flattering with the direction of the bandage design. The best news, I bought it during a 50% off day at goodwill, so for a $5 price tag, this expensive dress was mine! I've already worn it a few times, so it was definitely a good purchase!
I loved this cami the moment I set eyes on it during one of J. Crew Factory's online sales, but I still couldn't bring myself to buy it. (It's not silk, so I was able resist.) Then I saw one of my friends wearing it and it was just too cute, flattering but flowy and the neckline was fun but not too crazy for work. I knew it was a staple I wanted to add to my closet. But, I just couldn't bring myself to click buy. Maybe it was fate... because after a few months I found it at Goodwill! It's actually a size larger than I normally wear, but it's flowy and I think it fits pretty well, I've definitely gotten compliments every time I've worn it.
So the thrifting tip today? Just wait it out, if your persistent eventually the item you want, or at least something very similar will pop up in your local thrift store. This is one of those finds that had my jaw dropping to the floor. It was actually my first trip to the Goodwill Outlet in Baltimore. Digging through the huge bins is tough, but these shoes are proof that it's worth it. I would never even think of purchasing Stuart Weitzman shoes at full price, but I always keep an eye out for them at the thrift store.
These shoes were in rough shape—shame on whoever did this to $398 shoes!!! Essentially, they looked like they had been worn in a lake, pretty muddy and needed quite a bit of cleaning. The leather on one was a bit warped, but could be reshaped with the right inserts. Even so, it was a no-brainer to pick them up for $3. Unfortunately, they were a 1/2 size large on me and just didn't fit right no matter how much I tightened the straps. I ended up listing them on eBay and they sold within a week! I have really wanted to try out two current trends, boyfriend jeans and ripped jeans. (well not really current, they are remakes from the 80s/90s, let's remember everything is cyclical!) Anyway, I was having no luck, first off I thought boyfriend jeans only really worked on models who didn't have the hips that make baggy = frumpy. Second, I just couldn't find anything at the thrift store with the distressed look I wanted. And besides allll of that, I have a hard time finding jeans that are the right length, because apparently when you're a man you get all the length options, but when you're a woman, you don't get any taller as your waist gets larger... rant over.
Anyway, I have to give all the credit to one of my favorite blogs, Goodwill Gold, for giving me the idea to make my own distressed denim! Check out her post here and the video we both used here. I was able to find some J. Crew Matchstick jeans a size up that acted as boyfriend jeans, and they look good rolled up a tad, more like intentional ankle pants rather than highwaters. Then I used the youtube tutorial above and they turned out great! Just the right amount of distress, baby steps. What do you think about this DIY? Would you distress your own jeans or just purchase ones you already love? |
