As an avid J. Crew fan, I love getting their catalogs and browsing lookbooks. Am I ever going to purchase something right from the catalog? Absolutely not. As I'm sure everyone knows, that's when prices are at their peak. I rarely even shop J. Crew on super sales because I know I can find those pieces secondhand for much less a few months later.
Here's a good example; the Tippi sweater is a classic, it has been out for years. To me, that means I will eventually find one at the thrift store, but more importantly these sweaters will be all over resale sites like eBay and Poshmark. I found the pink Tippi at the thrift store in absolutely perfect condition for $6. I don't think it was ever worn. Then, browsing one of my favorite sellers on eBay, I found the teal sweater on the left for $12. It had a bit of wear from washing, but nothing too noticeable. The full price of these sweaters? $79 each. So before you purchase a classic from the catalog, make sure to check out your local thrift store or a resale site, you might just save $140.
