One category I have a hard time finding at the thrift store is "going out" clothing. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of Forever 21 dresses and skirts, but nothing my real life adult self would be wearing, even to the bar. I couldn't believe it when I came across this French Connection dress. It's form fitting but super flattering with the direction of the bandage design. The best news, I bought it during a 50% off day at goodwill, so for a $5 price tag, this expensive dress was mine! I've already worn it a few times, so it was definitely a good purchase!
I loved this cami the moment I set eyes on it during one of J. Crew Factory's online sales, but I still couldn't bring myself to buy it. (It's not silk, so I was able resist.) Then I saw one of my friends wearing it and it was just too cute, flattering but flowy and the neckline was fun but not too crazy for work. I knew it was a staple I wanted to add to my closet. But, I just couldn't bring myself to click buy. Maybe it was fate... because after a few months I found it at Goodwill! It's actually a size larger than I normally wear, but it's flowy and I think it fits pretty well, I've definitely gotten compliments every time I've worn it.
So the thrifting tip today? Just wait it out, if your persistent eventually the item you want, or at least something very similar will pop up in your local thrift store. I love the trend of calf hair leopard shoes. I found a pair of flats on Poshmark for a great price, and then spotted these on a Goodwill trip with my friend from out of town. I don't necessarily like peep-toe shoes but these have a hidden platform that makes them so comfortable and they were in great condition, I just couldn't pass them up. (And my friend agreed, they were a must-purchase)
Since I bought them in January and have yet to wear them, I am a bit apprehensive as to whether they actually were a good purchase. Hopefully the warmer weather will bring more opportunities. I know one thing for sure, I'm glad I bought them for under $15! Who are you ladies that purchase something, don't take the tags off, never wear it, then donate it? I'll never know... just kidding I have a friend who does this way too often. But still, I'm always amazed by the amount of items I see with the tag still attached. For example, this classy Ann Taylor a-line dress.
I get really excited when I see the tags still attached and was through the roof when this was my size. But, just a warning, always inspect new items just as thoroughly as you would used items. It may be sent to the thrift store for a reason, rips from being tried on are a relatively common one. I'll be honest though, I may have broken my own rule here for not buying an item when I don't have an occasion to wear it. I think this would be nice for a casual wedding or dinner out with my parents, but who knows, it's a little more conservative than I normally go. Only time will tell whether I will become that person donating a dress with tags still on it to Goodwill. (At least I will have only wasted $9, not $159) When I first started thrifting, I really didn't check out the sweaters very often because I thought there was no way I would find anything in that pilly mess. But, as I now know, you've got to sift through EVERYTHING to find the best pieces. This adorable LOFT sweater was actually my first sweater find and now I always skim the sweater aisle looking for that one pill-free treasure. Check out the perfect way that Sydne at Sydne Style wore this sweater. And a similar sweater styled by Annie at Stylish Petite. So much inspiration, I love it! I can't wait to put my own spin on these fabulous outfit combos!
